On one side, this frozen temple, a lake called Bindu Sagar, touches the temple and is said to have medical powers. According to the Puranas, the water of an underground river coming out of the Lingaraja temple cures physical illness. 



Thus tank water is considered sacred and pilgrims take a holy bath during the festival. Hindus are allowed to enter this temple complex. Non-Hindus can see the structure of this magnificent temple from outside the temple.

Shivaratri is celebrated as the main festival of the temple. When the entire sanctum is decorated with flowers, lanterns and lights. The temple has more than 6,000 visitors on the day of Shivratri and is a major day of celebration when the number increases to around 250,000 visitors. 



Shivaratri is the main festival celebrated in the month of Phalgun when thousands of devotees visit the temple. Apart from a full day of fasting, vine leaves are offered to Lingaraja on this auspicious day. The main festivities occur at night when devotees pray throughout the night.


The devotees usually break their fast after the Mahadip (a huge lamp) is burnt on the summit of the temple. The festival reminds Lingaraja of slaying a demon.

Rath Utsav (Ratha-yatra) of Lingaraja is celebrated every year on Ashokashtami. The deity is carried in a chariot to the Rameshwar Deula temple. Thousands of devotees followed and drew brightly decorated chariots bearing statues of Lingaraja and his sister Rukmani.

The Lingaraja Temple is rated as the best temple in India. The door to the entrance door is made of sandalwood. The main gate of the Lingaraja temple is towards the east and is made of sandstone and laterite. The main entrance is located to the east, while there are smaller entrances to the north and south. The temple is built in the Deula style.

This temple was built by Raja Jajati Keshari in the 7th century. The Lingaraja Temple is situated in the old part of Bhubaneswar Town, this temple is easily accessible by local means.
