According to the legend, a learned Brahmin named Sudharma lived with his religious wife Sudha. Both were supreme and true devotees of Lord Shiva. They did not have any children even after many years of marriage. In the end, Sudha persuaded her husband and got him married to his sister Ghushma. Ghushma was also a true and exclusive devotee of Lord Shiva. Shortly after marriage, Ghushma received a son by the grace of Lord Shiva.
After getting a son, Ghushma started to be very happy, his happiness was given to his elder sister. Sudha could not bear the brunt and one-day Sudeha killed Ghoshma’s sleeping son and threw the child’s body in a nearby pond. In the morning, there was a lot of furor in the house, but despite being distraught, Ghushma did not give up Shiva’s devotion and like daily she went to the same pond, made a hundred Shivalinga and worshiped them with complete ritual, and then immersed them.
Lord Shiva was very pleased with this Shiva devotion of Ghushma. As soon as Ghushma turned towards the house after worshiping, his son was found alive. She was stunned to see this Shiva-Leela because Shiva had appeared before her.
Now when he went to kill Sudeha with the trident, Ghushma begged Shivaji to fold his hands and ask for forgiveness of his sister Sudeha’s crime. Seeing this generosity of Ghushma, Lord Shiva forgave her. Ghushma again pleaded with Lord Shankar that if he is happy with his devotion then reside there. Lord Shiva accepted his prayer and since then Lord Shiva settled there as Jyotirlinga.
The Ghrishneshwar Jyotirlinga temple is opened for Shiva devotees at 5:30 in the morning.
The Ghrishneshwar Jyotirlinga temple closes at 9 in the evening.
Note:- However, in the month of Shravan (August to September), the temple remains open for the devotees visiting here from 3 am to 11 pm.
The temple is open to Shiva devotees daily from 5:30 am to 9:30 pm. The temple is open to Shiva devotees from 3 am to 11 pm in the month of Sawan.
The Grishneshwar Temple is about 422 km from Mumbai.
The distance from Aurangabad to Ghrishneshwar Temple is 35 km, and takes 45 minutes by road, passing through dense trees, high mountains, and beautiful Ellora caves, this route, and journey are very memorable.
Aurangabad is the nearest railway station. By descending here, you can reach the Grishneshwar temple by taxi or auto.
It is about 250 km away from Pune to Grishneshwar Temple.
The temple administration does not allow men to enter the Grishneshwar temple wearing shirts or vests, and only saffron colored dhoti is allowed. Women should wear saree and churidar.
