There are two types of story about this temple, one is that
The Vindhya Salt Mountains did penance to Lord Shiva and Lord Shiva appeared happy with austerity and blessed and incarnated as a linga.
 
 
The linga was divided into two parts, one part divided into Omkareshwar and the other part divided into Mamaleshwar. 
 It is said that the main part of the Jyotirlinga is located in Omkareshwar and the worldly linga Amareshwar / Mamaleshwar.
 
 
 
The second story is this: King Mandhata named Ikshvaku dynasty did severe penance of Lord Shiva here, Lord Shiva appeared in good spirits due to his severe penance since then Lord Shiva is considered to be enshrined in Omkareshwar.

There is no accurate and authentic information about the construction of this Hindu temple, who and when it was built is unknown. This temple has a huge assembly-like place which is about 14 feet high, based on 40 huge pillars, this temple is very beautiful to look at.
 

Worship and time at Omkareshwar Temple

 
The worship of the temple is regularly performed by the temple trust at 3 am, the afternoon worship is performed by the priest of the royal family Scindia and the evening is worshiped by the priest of Holkar state. This Hindu temple is always crowded with devotees. 
 
 
Shiva devotees coming here take bath in the river Narmada and worship Lord Shiva with water, flowers, coconut and other materials. Devotees throng to this Hindu temple especially during the months of festivals and on the day of Shivaratri.
 
 
Every Monday in this temple, a gold-framed statue of Lord Omkareshwar is seated in a beautiful palanquin and a procession / tableau is taken out by priests and devotees with drums, called dola or palanquin. These procession / tableaux trips are carried out in different parts of the city. It is celebrated on a large scale in the holy month of Shravan and a large number of devotees come to see Shiva.
