About Yamunotri Temple Uttarakhand! Yamunotri Temple is one of the major tourist places and places to visit in Uttarakhand. Gangotri Dham is an important religious place in the pilgrimage center of Uttarakhand. This holy place is also one of the main Char Dham of Uttarakhand, where tourists and pilgrims keep visiting throughout the year. Yamunotri is also known as Jamunotra.



Yamunotri Dham, situated at an altitude of about 3293 meters, has become a special tourist destination of Uttarakhand for the devotees as the origin of the Yamuna river. A black marble idol of Goddess Yamuna is installed in the Yamunotri temple. Yamunotri Temple is 13 km from Hanuman Chatti and 6 km from Janki Chatti. The temple can be reached by horse or palanquin, both are available on hire. If devotees travel to Yamunotri on foot from Hanuman Chatti, then many waterfalls are visible on the way.



There are two trekking routes from Hanuman Chatti to Yamunotri, one goes through the Markandeya temple from the right bank, where sage Markandeya wrote the Markandeya Purana, the other route which lies on the left bank of the river, which passes through Kharsali, where Yamunotri temple is a five or six-hour climb.


Yamunotri temple history and surroundings

The 18th century Yamunotri temple was built by Amar Singh Thapa. After some time this temple was damaged. This temple was rebuilt again in the 19th century. This temple is situated on the backdrop of Bandarpanch. The temple is part of the Char Dham pilgrimage for devotees.

The temple is opened to devotees on the day of Akshaya Tritiya and is closed on the second day after Diwali. A little ahead of this temple is the actual source of the river Yamuna which is at an elevation of about 4,421 meters. Two hot springs are also present in Yamunotri, which gives relief to the tired devotees, there is boiling water in Surya Kund, rice and potatoes can be cooked with this hot water.

Raw rice is cooked in this hot water by devotees who are used to making prasad. Whereas the second clean and cold water comes out of the Gauri Kund which is used for bathing. Lodging, some small ashrams, and guest houses are available to stay in and around the temple. Worship rituals and tasks such as overseeing and distributing offerings are performed by priests or their families.
