Gomateshwara Temple is one of the most important pilgrimage places for Jains. The temple is built on the peak of Vindhyagiri hill at an altitude of 3347 feet. Standing at a huge height of 58.8 feet, the idol is carved out of single granite rock. 


The construction of such a large statue is at such a great height without any external support. Built-in the 10th century, this statue is very popular among the people due to its unique structure.


The most important festival Mahamastakabhisheka is celebrated every 12 years in the Gomateshwara temple. It is a very important festival for Jains. In which the statue of Lord Bahubali is anointed with milk, curd, ghee, sugar, almonds, saffron, and flowers, and various precious stones and coins (like gold and silver) are offered. 


A flight of 620 steps gives access to this temple from the entrance near the pond. Gomateshwara Temple is one of the major places to visit in Shravanabelagola.


The Gomateshwara Temple was built between about 982 AD and Chamundarai Daura, a minister of the Ganga King Rajamalla. The main temple is surrounded by a large outer wall, carving Jain statues, monkeys, lions, fish, cows, and female figures, which are carved around the wall. 


It takes about 2-3 hours to climb the hill, visit all the monuments and come down. Morning is the best time. The hill offers a beautiful view of Shravanabelagola village, temple pond, and Chandragiri hill.
