The then Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the construction of this huge statue on 31 October 2013 on the occasion of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birthday.

In October 2014, Larsen & Toubro began construction of the statue after making the lowest bid at 2,989 crores (US $ 436.39 million). Construction began on 31 October 2013. The construction of the statue was completed in mid-October 2018. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on October 31, 2018, on the occasion of Sardar Patel’s birthday.
