Brihadeeswarar Temple Mystery, History & Facts


There is a Brihadeeswarar temple dedicated to Shiva, located on the south bank of the Kaveri River in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India! It is the largest Hindu temple in India along with South India. The world-famous temple is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.


The temple is also known as Rajarajeswaram, the 11th-century Brihadeeswarar temple was built by the Chola emperor Raja Chola I. The Brihadeeswarar temple, built entirely of granite stone according to the principles of Vastu Shastras and Agams, is well built with grand and magnificent architecture. 


The main feature of this temple is that it does not leave any shadow on the ground in the afternoon. 

Brihadeeswarar Temple is one of the most beautiful architectural splendor of the country. Inside the temple, a temple tower is built which is famous among devotees and tourists as Vimana. 

The height of the tower of this temple is 66 meters. Built of granite, the Vimana Tower atop the sanctum sanctorum is one of the tallest places in South India, one of the tallest structures in the world at the time of its construction. 


An idol of a Nandi is also located at the entrance of this Brihadeeswarar temple, which is about thirteen feet in height and sixteen feet in length. This temple is 1000 years old, this temple is surrounded by tourists throughout the year.

The Shiva Linga installed inside the temple is one of the largest Shiva lingams in India. It is also famous for the beautiful texture and quality of its sculpture, in addition to the Shiva linga, Nandi, Parvati, Karthikeya, Ganesh, and other deities are seen in this temple complex. The temple is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu.
