Belur Math Ramakrishna Temple in West Bengal, India. The Belur Math Temple is located in the city of Kolkata in the state of West Bengal, India. This temple was founded by Swami Vivekananda, the chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. It is situated on the west bank of the Hooghly River, the Belur Math is one of the important institutions in West Bengal and Kolkata. The temple is famous for its architecture.


The first foundation stone for the Ramakrishna Temple was laid by Swami Sivananda on 13 March 1929 on the birthday of Sri Ramakrishna. Swami Vigyanananda laid the foundation stone on 16 July 1935 at the present site 30 meters south of the former. The construction was completed on 14 January 1938 and was anointed. It is a place of pilgrimage for people around the world to accept various religious beliefs. People from India and abroad come to see this famous temple. The image of Sri Ramakrishna is inscribed on a marble lotus inside the temple,



Situated on the banks of the Nirmal Ganga, this temple is spread over 40 acres, the complex consists of temples dedicated to the great Ramakrishna, Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. The complex also has a museum containing artifacts related to the history of the Ramakrishna Mission, the Samadhi Mandir of Swami Vivekananda and his brother’s disciples, and the house facing the Ganges where Swamiji spent his last few days. Adjacent to the monastery are several educational institutions associated with the Ramakrishna Mission. This place is a major center of pilgrimage and a heritage site of national importance.


The evening aarti takes place at 5:30 pm in the temple, at which the evening bell is rung to indicate that visitors are not allowed inside the temple, the aarti here is different from other places of worship, Sri Aarti songs sung in praise of Ramakrishna and Shri Sharada Devi. Flowers and sweets are not offered in this temple like other temples.


Note: The temple premises are very large, it takes at least 2 to 3 hours to see the entire temple.


How to reach Belur Math?

Belur Math is located in the northern part of Howrah, the nearest railway station is Howrah railway station, about 4 km from this station. All modes of transport are available from outside Howrah railway station and bus stand. Belur temple can be easily reached by auto, bus or taxi.
