According to Shivpurana legend, a Shiva devotee was captured by the demon Daruka. The demon imprisoned him along with many others in his capital Darukwana. Shiva’s devotee advised all prisoners to chant “Om Namah Shivaya”, which angered Daruka who ran to kill Shiva’s devotee. Lord Shiva appeared before the demon and killed him. Thus Nageshwar Jyotirlinga was born.
Unlike other Nageswara temples, the idol or linga here faces south. One of the main attractions of the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is the enormous 80-foot-tall Lord Shiva statue. The temple is characterized by distinctive Hindu architecture. Nageswara Shiva Linga is made of stone, known as Dwarka Shila, it has small circles. It has the shape of 3 Mukhi Rudraksha.
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Nageswara Temple is one of the oldest temples mentioned in the Shiva Purana. Jyotirlinga has special significance in Nageshwar as it is considered to be the first of all 12 Jyotirlingas. The Swayambhu Lingam, enshrined in the underground chamber at the Nageswara Temple, is known as Nageswara Mahadev. The Nageshwar temple attracts thousands of tourists and pilgrims every year.
