Gangotri is located in Uttarkashi district in the state of Uttarakhand, India, Lord Shiva released Ganga from his hair. Gangotri originated from Gangotri. Gangotri is the main origin of the river Ganga and Chhota Char Dham is one of the pilgrimage sites.

According to Hindu mythology, the Goddess Ganga took the form of a river to save the ancestors of King Bhagiratha, who was blessed by the severe penance of King Bhagiratha. The main Gangotri temple was built by Amar Singh Thapa. This sacred Ganges river is also called Bhagirathi. 

The river Ganges is considered very sacred among Hindus. A large crowd gathers at every pilgrimage at the time of Kumbh. The holy river originates at Gaumukh situated in the Gangotri glacier, which is 19 km from Gangotri. 

The temple is opened to devotees on the day of Akshaya Tritiya and is closed on the second day after Diwali. During this time, the idol of the goddess is kept in Mukhba village near Harsil. Worship rituals and tasks such as overseeing and distributing offerings are performed by priests or their families. These priests are from Mukhaba village.

The Bhagirath Shila is considered the most sacred rock near this temple where King Bhagirath prayed to Lord Shiva.

Pandava Cave:  

1.5 km away from Gangotri temple is the Pandava cave, where the Pandavas are believed to have meditated and rested while going to Kailash. Pilgrims are allowed to reach the Pandava cave.

Gangotri is a part of the pilgrimage to Chhota Char Dham, Gangotri is often followed by Yamunotri Darshan. Pilgrims usually make their camp in Uttarkashi. The time to reach Gangotri Temple from Uttarkashi is about 4 hours by road.
