Currently, whoever asks about the Char Dham Yatra, they count the names of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. While these are small Char Dham and not the actual Char Dham


The actual Char Dham is the four sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites in India. There are such references in the Puranas and Hindus believe that visiting these sites attains “Moksha” (Moksha), peace of mind. 


In Indian scriptures, Badrinath, Dwarka, Jagannath Puri and Rameswaram are considered as Char Dham, in Hindus it is also called Badi Char Dham. Actually, Char Dham means these four holy shrines. There are such beliefs of Hindus that every Hindu must visit Char Dham in his lifetime.


In Hindu scriptures, it is described that those who are able to visit these pilgrimage sites are not only washed away the sins of this birth, but they are also freed from the bondage of life and death. According to Hindu scriptures, pilgrimage sites are very sacred places, where the earth and heaven are united.


Now we know about Chhoti Char Dham Yatra, to start the journey to these pilgrimage places, first visit Yamunotri and Gangotri. Then, after taking holy water from these places, perform Jalabhishek at the Kedarnath Shivling and then after visiting Badrinathji, a form of Lord Vishnu, the Chhota Char Dham Yatra is completed.

Since 2014, Uttarakhand government has made it mandatory for devotees to register themselves while visiting the state for Char Dham Yatra. After the biometric registration process is completed, biometric cards are issued to all the devotees.
